Matlock Bath Illuminations in a van
Matlock Bath, Derbyshire. Decorated, lit-up boats paraded on the River Derwent after dark, in a gorge village with one main road through it. A tradition that goes back to Victorian times, run by the district council, and busy.
Saturdays and Sundays, plus Friday 30 October. Fireworks every Saturday in October and on the final Sunday, 1 November.
What the organiser says about vans
- The council says you are not guaranteed a parking place: the Station and Temple Road car parks can be full by 5pm or earlier. [1]
- Park and ride runs from Cromford Meadows (DE4 3RQ) on firework nights only, 4.30pm to 10pm — £2 return per adult in 2026, with no parking charge on top. [1]
- Council car parks in Matlock Bath charge 24 hours a day, with a £5 event charge from 4pm to 10pm at weekends during the Illuminations. [1]
- Parking on double yellow lines or verges either side of the village is enforced with a £70 fine, and side streets are stewarded for residents only. [1]
- The council's page does not say anything about motorhomes or overnight parking. We have not confirmed a height or length limit at Cromford Meadows — look before you commit a long van to it.
Numbered points come from the sources listed below. Points without a number are our own advice, not the organiser's.
Our plain advice
Do not plan to sleep in Matlock Bath itself. Arrive early, use the park and ride on a firework night, and have the night's stop sorted before you set off — the gorge road is slow to leave after the fireworks.
